At Compass Regional Hospice, we believe hospice is more than the care we provide — it's a community of people coming together to ensure every patient and family is surrounded by compassion, dignity, and support. The best care happens when healthcare partners, first responders, families, and neighbors unite with one shared purpose: caring for one another.
Recently, a local family experienced exactly what that community looks like.
They knew their loved one's final days were near. While they were preparing emotionally for the difficult goodbye, they never expected an unexpected transportation issue to add even more stress to an already heartbreaking situation. No transportation available, and it cost thousands of dollars for a 30-minute drive; it seemed she might have to remain in the hospital instead of spending her final days at home.
That's when the community stepped in.
Pam Linkous, a Social Work Assistant at Caroline Nursing & Rehab, refused to let transportation become a barrier. She immediately began thinking of what she could do and began coordinating with the Compass team, the patient's family, and local resources to find a solution.
The patient's family member had proudly served with the Goodwill Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years. When members of the department learned about the family’s situation, they didn’t hesitate to step in and offer their support.
Understanding how important it was for her to be where she wanted to be during the time she had left, they volunteered to provide transportation, making sure she could spend those precious moments surrounded by the people she loved, in the comfort of home, and filled with the care and compassion she deserved.
Behind the scenes, Compass nurses, Pam, the family, and the volunteer firefighters worked together to make the transition as smooth as possible. Every phone call, every adjustment, and every act of kindness reflected one shared goal: providing comfort during life's most difficult moments.
Just a few days later, the patient passed away peacefully at home.
"Pam, I can't thank you enough for what you did for our family." For Pam, the response was simple: she would do the same for anyone.
That selfless compassion is what Compass hospice, and our community is all about.
We are incredibly grateful for compassionate partners like Pam Linkous, and the members of the Goodwill Volunteer Fire Department, whose dedication reminds us that every act of kindness makes a difference.
Because when a community works together, we can give patients something truly priceless: the opportunity to spend the time they have left with comfort, dignity, and the people they love, making every moment, and every bit of quality of life, matter.
